Charlotte, NC – April 20, 2025— Affordable Housing For the Carolinas (AHFTC) is proud to celebrate its one-year anniversary as a nonprofit organization committed to advancing housing equity and uplifting communities across the Carolinas. In just one year, AHFTC launched two transformative programs—Critical Home Repair and Beyond the Bricks—which have already served over 176 families throughout the region.

To honor this incredible first year and spotlight the ongoing need for accessible housing, AHFTC invites the public to attend the 3rd Annual Affordable Housing Awareness Month Kickoff Breakfast on May 1, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Johnson C. Smith University.

Highlights of the event include:

  • Keynote address from acclaimed historian and community advocate Dr. Tom Hanchett

  • Presentation of the Community Trailblazer Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, and Sankofa Award

  • Recognition of Ignite Your Impact Program participant Mylan, a young changemaker who launched "Mylan’s Shoe Closet" at Eastland Middle School in Statesville to ensure students have access to new, quality footwear

  • Official proclamations from Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, the Town of Davidson, and the Town of Huntersville, formally declaring May as "Affordable Housing Awareness Month"

“These proclamations and celebration reflect the power of a regional approach to collaboration and community vision,” said AHFTC Executive Director Mary Hunter, who pioneered Affordable Housing Awareness Month (AHAM) in the Charlotte region 3 years ago. “This anniversary is a milestone—and a moment to recommit to building pathways to housing opportunity and an increased quality of life.”
